Adam Mowery

Adam Mowery is a fixture of the Canadian east coast underground. With his distinctive voice, surreal lyrics and unconventional recording style, Adam's earworm songs defy conventional genre classification. A true shape-shifter, Adam embraces elements of folk, country, rock 'n' roll, punk, psych and outsider music, often within the same song. His discography, much of which was released on homemade cassettes and CD-Rs, explores emotional honesty, eclectic humour, and the pursuit of the perfect melody.

As a teenager in the late 1990s, Adam began experimenting with 4-track tape machines. From his childhood bedroom in Saint John, New Brunswick, catchy, quirky compositions came to life under a blanket of warbly tape hiss. Influenced equally by both the lo-fi movement (Beck, Guided By Voices, Eric's Trip, Daniel Johnston) and Oldies radio classics from the 50s and 60s, Mowery developed a style that melds old school pop sensibilities with homespun sonic atmospheres. "My credo is 'keep it low fidelity but listenable.' Capture the energy of a basement, garage, or creative space, and trust that those charms will translate to the recording itself." The hobby became a habit, and Mowery's penchant for analog environments persists to this day.

Adam's early years in Saint John saw him performing with groups like the anti-folk jugband The Port City Allstars, and psychedelic pub rockers Wooden Wives. Energetic live shows, partnered with antics that bordered on performance art, earned Adam spots at festivals like Sappyfest, Pop Montreal and Halifax Pop Explosion. Later relocating to Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 2012, Adam collaborated with songwriter Andrew Mazerolle (Muncho) to form power pop group The Grubbies, independently issuing the EP New to Cool in 2014. In 2015, Adam began the long-distance recording project PAPAL VISIT with frequent collaborator Pierre Cormier. Providing lyrics and melodies over Cormier's instrumental tracks, the group remains active today as a quintet of Saint John scene legends and has produced four full-length albums including A Little Further Down the Flame (2015), Golden Grove (2017), Five Fathom Hole (2021), The Capsize Party (2025).

Working as a collaborator with a diverse set of artists, Mowery has appeared as a bass player for projects with legendary Canadian troubadour BA Johnston (Shit Sucks, 2015), celebrated Acadian songstress Julie Aubé (Contentment, 2022), contemporary blues innovator Keith Hallett ("What It's For," 2022), and on multiple projects with acclaimed singer/songwriter and producer Mike Trask. In 2024 Mowery produced Busy Doing Nothing, the debut album from Fredericton throwback combo Nate and the Busy Boys, which was nominated for Music New Brunswick's Recording of the Year. "I love working with artists who have a deep appreciation for the history of recorded music, and who don't necessarily concern themselves with what's happening in modern music. A good song is a good song but personally my tastes tend to gravitate towards the outsiders and weirdos."

Working with Saint John label Monopolized on Horseshoe Canyon and the anthology Brick By Brick: 2007 - 2022, all of Adam's solo releases are being remastered and reissued through the Monopolized Remaster Project. The project sees Monopolized head honcho Corey Bonnevie (Doctor Mother Father, Little You Little Me) polishing up Mowery's back catalogue and bringing it to a wider audience via streaming platforms. Previously available only on small cassette and compact disc runs, independently and on a variety of indie labels, Mowery's full solo discography consists of The Three Sisters (2007), Port City Burning (2008), FERNHILL (2010),

St. Joseph's Mechanical Penthouse (2012), Twin Oaks (2012), Local Bands (2013), and Horseshoe Canyon (2020).
